Lincoln Brakes on an early v8
I'm trying to source a brake update for a 34 Ford PU. I would prefer early Lincoln backing plates due to the adjustment feature. Can anyone tell me if these are truly early Lincoln backing plates? I'm comparing with the 39-40 Ford style and there will be some issues with fitment.
Those are the medium depth 42-48 Lincoln backing plates. They usually require a spacer to push them away from the spindle to do the same job as the flatter 41 backing plates (reproductions sold as "1939" lincoln backing plates, which is wrong when talking about fronts.)

When using the 1939-1940 DEEP front backing plates, 1932-1934 or 1935-1936 Ford spindles must be used. Because of the shape of the deep pocket in the backing plate, it is physically impossible to fit 1937 or later Ford spindles. The deep pocket backing plates have the same smaller center hole and smaller mounting bolt pattern (and 3/8" bolt holes) as 1932-1936 Ford spindles.
The spindles must be modified by grinding the rounded top portion of the spindle flange flat so that it will not interfere with the backing plate.
A special kingpin and bearing set must be used which places thin Torrington thrust bearings between the bottom kingpin boss on the spindle and the bottom of the axle kingpin boss as space between the top of the spindle and the backing plate is extremely limited.
A bearing spacer must be used on the spindle snout to properly align the hub/drum. The stock grease baffles on the '32-'34 spindles must be pryed off and discarded or else they will interfere with the bearing seal.
The 1941 Front plates and 1942-1948 front plates can be used with all 1932-1948 Ford spindles. The 1932-1936 spindles still require that the rounded top portion of the flange be ground flat, special kingpins and bearing spacers. The special kingpins are still necessary because on Bendix brakes the wheel cylinders are mounted lower than on the Ford-Lockheed brakes so the stock early kingpins will interfere with the hoses. Some clearancing may be necessary on both the 1937-1941 "round" spindes and the 1942-1948 "square" spindles when used with the 1941 or 1942-1948 Lincoln plates.
All Lincoln rear plates are the same 1939-1948 and can be used on the front with the handbrake levers removed and handbrake cable guide holes welded shut.
The reproduction Lincoln brakes both by Wilson Welding and M/T Products are not replicas of any particular year of Lincoln plates. They are a hybrid using styling from all versions of front Lincoln plates.
