WoodieODMitchell OD in my 36 Ford Woodie
I'm doing a frame up restoration on a 36 Woodie. Since I intend to drive it when I'm finished,
I bought a Mitchell 36% overdrive. Delivery was 4 months. It comes in both 28% and 36%. I chose the taller one since Texas is flat where I live. I already had the frame off so it was a snap to install. You take off the original driveshaft and torque tube and replace it with the OD and the new driveshaft and torque tube that Mitchell provides.
I installed the shifter supposedly upside down. I don't see how it could be installed otherwise.
It has a bracket that attaches to the back of the universal clamshell. Also shown
is part of the stainless steel tailpipe and muffler I installed from Waldron's Exhaust.
I added about 2 inches to the shift lever so the shift rod would clear the frame
This is the cable style shifter that is also available. I used this
shifter in my 28 Model A Open Cab Pickup that also has a Mitchell OD.
The unit is about 19 inches long, but included is a complete new
driveshaft and torque tube. I have plenty of space for the OD in
my Woodie but I have heard other 36 body style might involve
cutting the floorpans.
The old driveshaft and torque tube.
My Woodie has ample room with the OD installed.
The large hole is where I replaced part of the floorpan.
OD looking towards the front
I routed the oil fill tube to the frame. Also
shown is the routing of the speedometer cable
extender
